we tried this at the farm and it did kill some weeds but it didnt touch the thistles or dandelions

I use boiling water followed by table salt between the cracks of paving.

Put salt on some stubborn weeds around here and it did the trick, (of course that was after I pulled them up, don't want them back anytime soon). I read somewhere that vinegar is good, and it does have salt in it, but it didn't do a thing for me, whereas pure table salt was just the ticket.
