    Default WARNING Clever Scam?

I wrote this on face book earlier.

SKY (Nothing to do with sky) SCAM WARNING VIA LETTER POST. I had a letter very professional looking today saying PLEASE CONTACT US TO ARRANGE REPLACEMENT OF A CREDIT BALANCE ON YOUR ACCOUNT. blah blah blah Please phone 08081 014 437 blah blah blah. Well for one I haven't been with Sky for about 4 years and too just a gut instinct told me to google the number (Even though I had the phone ready)
I'm sure now IF I HAD CALLED they would have asked Security questions and bank details for them to "refund" you. DON'T PHONE. (Probably a premium line number too)

Is it a Scam or Not? Check google link VVV and some say Yes and some No. Well I am not taking a chance.

Personally I trust Money Saving Expert but if you wary why not phone Sky on an advertised number and ask them

I just called the number on the letter and keyed in the account number shown on the letter. It is an automated process which after keying in the correct number tells you your refund cheque will be dispatched in 10 to 14 days and then hangs up. No other information is asked for. Whole process takes less than one minute.

It could a number harvesting exercise, unless you use the prefix of 141 before the number you are calling your number wil probably be available to the people receiving the call. The 141 prefix does not always work hower as there is software available that breaks through the system - the emergency services use it on the 999 system as do some Companies.

As with the mystery phone calls where there is no one on the other end the number would be logged as live and sold on to other scammers.

141 before emergency number 999.thought 999 is the shortest even for the emergency services use it themselves.
999 to the emergency services and for the emergency services 999.
    if i'm wrong do apologise.

Think I got you confused there Tony, I was talking of a situation where if for some reason someone wanted to withold their identity from the police and used the prefix 141 to hide their number. The police have the technology to negate that and show their number.
