    Default 99p stores

I'd often wondered what the 99p stores would do in years to come when inflation reached the level where items that cheap would be such rubbish that they wouldn't be worth buying.(Some might say they've reached that stage now!)Seems like they won't have to worry, they've been bought out by Poundland.
Usually when one retailer absorbs another it leads to job losses, this will certainly be the case in Northampton. There is one of each opposite the other in Abington St.Is your town in a similar situation?

We have a mixture locally of Poundland, Nickel n Dime, Parkys, Home Bargains and two or three others
.... not sure who owns what any more ...

they all seem to be managing to make a living so far though

Poundland & 99p stores got their idea from the outdoor markets who all had 50p stalls on them. Guess sometime in future they will be called Fiver stores.
My posts only state my own opinions, unless I've stolen them from someone else

We have a choice of quite a few in Rochdale.

As for inflation they should be OK for quite a while. Firstly there are always new products or those that currently cost pennies that will fall into their bracket. In addition they reduce the quantity, so where it was 4 bars of chocolate for £1 you will get three.

Yes, where I go shopping on a Wednesday afternoon there's a 99p Store and Poundland near each other, can't see Poundland keeping them both open.

Reducing quantity is already happening in my local pound shop packs of 5 Walkers crisps instead of 6 (I rarely go in other pound shops so no idea if that's normal for pound shops).

I buy bits and pieces - like 16 AA batteries for £1 - I have quite a lot of clocks and they do not need strong batteries so these ones are fine and last for ages; like freezer containers and other kitchen utensils, and oh yes like hob cleaner, the 99p one cleans my hob better than the ones at 5 times the price ... so yes I like the crap they have on offer and the price even more ..........

PS .. Getting 5 instead of 6 is reducing quantity not quality
... still Walkers and sounds still a good deal - if the bag sizes are the same

Surely the sale price should have been 99 pence - not 55 million pounds.
