That was my experience when I first passed my test. People cut me up and treated me as though I didn't know what I was doing on the road, and when I took the 'P' plates off after a few weeks I noticed that behaviour stopped and I was treated with more respect. Mind you, there is still a lot of impatience around. Drivers seem to forget that they were learners once, and some seem to think that they are the only ones entitled to be on the road.

    Congratulations!

I remember when my niece got her license. My sister came over to pick me up with her driving the car. We got to the destination and I quick ran out in the parking lot and kissed the ground. My sister was laughing so hard and a few other people in the parking lot were looking while I told them that my niece just got her license. I guess I sort of embarrassed her.

Well, I hope my husband is in the majority not the minority, as he does show patience and understanding to learner drivers and P plate drivers, well to most drivers really I suppose. He's not bothered if another driver cuts us up, if they're in that much of a hurry we'd rather have them in front of us than behind.

That is most impressive Emmily, kudos to your son!

It took me 5 tries, I hate to admit it, but I got there eventually.

Best wishes for many sales to all,

I passed first time way back in early 1970's, but I had already been driving without L plates or supervision for a few years!
(Please don't report me to the cops!)
I passed my driving test in Florida first time as well, I wouldn't like to take a test now though - I know for sure that I would fail miserably.
Luckily, for other motorists, I seldom hit the road nowadays, only travel with a chauffeur!
The narrow unlit lanes around here scare me, especially when Range Rovers and the likes come at you on a bend in the middle of the road.
It's a pity really, as I was attending night classes at Otley College and Suffolk Uni in Ipswich - had to pack everything in due to my fear of driving at night.
Many congrats to your son Emm, a great achievement! Tell him WELL DONE!

Me too, Trish! The Officer who rode with me on my driving test told me to parallel park with nothing: imaginary car! Good thing I actually learned how to do that and make it look like I was negotiating a vehicle! I'm glad he didn't have me try to PP with a real car: I couldn't learn it and never do it to this day, 42 years later!

Good job, Alex! Happy for your son, Emm!

Cheers Kuroguro, Sue, Trish and Addygirl

My late mum gave up after failing 8 tests in the 1970s. Later found out she was taking tranquilisers to calm her nerves, no wonder she didn't pass.

My oldest sister is almost a generation older than myself. As a teenager, she gave up after backing up into a porch post.

Then in her late 30's, she was working at a lumber yard and learn to drive a truck. She took her driving test 4 weeks before her oldest son did.
