I have a huge problem all the paint that has been put on my stair posts and skirtings is peeling off in sheets, I think last time i did it I used crown satin one coat, I don't know what this guy has used but i did stipulate crown or dulux ( I think he used leyland out of a big tub as he kept going out to his van to fill his pot up) I also noticed a tin of dulux eco undercoat, is it all going to fall off?

It sounds as though he hasn't prepared the area properly and used cheap paint. It's very bad that he didn't use the type of paint you specified. If the 'work' is still within its guarantee time or has been recently done, you could contact him and tell him about the problem. He doesn't sound very professional, but he ought to correct his work if it is now failing.

Hi Lake, Guarantee time doesn't come into it, he offered to help us do it after he had completed the outside of the house, gates etc. All i want to know really is if the incorrect paint has been used on top of the crown stuff, the pain was't cheap to us it was well over £100, it's just annoying as a couple of years ago i spent £80 out for paint and mikes son and girlfriend just wasted it, so i am now over £200 out for paint, I am now going to do it myself, it's low down so i can manage it as it's almost all sit down work, i just want to know is there a correct or incorrect paint to put over what is already on there, i have read about water based and oil and don't know what to use.

For the paint to peel off in sheets means he hasn't sanded down/prepared the old paint so the new paint has nothing to adhere to.

If I was in your position I would get him to do the job properly at his own expense. Failing that you could try the small claims court but that will cost you £60 to get started.

edit - if you want to d it yourself then I would suggest a hard sanding to get rid of the so called new paint. Then a light sanding to prepare the old paint for the new paint.

Hi Olivia, I am quite happy with the outside of the house that he did ( paid for separately ) he did some extra bits as well to help mike out as he can hardly stand up straight, so i don't want to have a go, i just want to know what it wrong...............it's my fault for seeing a bit of paint stuck up and i pulled it and it just came off in a lump, can't leave anything alone

Am not going to take him to court as he is a nice little guy who will do anything to help you if you ask him, He has even built a step for mike outside so he can get back into the kitchen. I just need advice on what paint to buy really, not really worth the argument for a couple of tins of gloss and an undercoat is it.

I always use Dulux but please ensure you sand, sugar soap and rinse with clean water properly or it could happen again. As they say, a good job is in the preparation. Well that's what I was told anyway.
