    Default Ebay take too much

From what I've calculated, Ebay will usually make the same, if not more than the seller.

If you buy an item for £10 and auction it for £20, you would think you'd make more than Ebay with such a crazy mark up, but in most cases you won't.

For example: The item will have to be sent recorded, so that's around £6 plus packaging costs, so lets call it £7.

Total cost for the buyer £27.

    - Ebay Fee 10% = £2.70 + £0.35 = £3.05

    PayPal Fee One 3.5% (of £27) = £0.95 + PayPal Fee Two £0.20 = £1.15

    Total Ebay Fee = £4.20

    Cost of item £10

    P+P £7

    Total £17

    £27 - Ebay Fee (£4.20) = £22.80
    - Item cost and P+P(£17) = £5.80 (less 50% TAX) = £2.90

The item cost £10 and sold for £20 (huge mark up). The profit was £10.

    Ebay's £4.20 from £10 = 42% of your profits.

This is precisely why I don't sell on Feepay, among other things. I can't afford to give my profits to a bunch of greedy bloodsuckers and why should I when I've got eBid, where everyone is nice and helpful and they don't suck the blood out of small sellers. Go eBid!!!

Best wishes for many sales to all,

The secret to Selling is in the Buying.....

and the correct markup on resale bearing in mind the overheads.

I can see how profit can be made, but Ebay take too much. The fees are cleverly fragmented so the average seller doesn't realise how much they're actually losing. I just thought I'll throw those figures out to help out a few people.

Next, I'll draw up an Ebid comparison

Excellent idea. Maybe you can get eBid to post it on their blog.

Best wishes for many sales to all,

    50% TAX ???
anyway no one should pay any tax before deducting all their business expenses

also 100% mark-up is not a huge mark-up (ask Apple)

I hear you. I was merely trying to point out that your Business model is not one I would even consider using.... 100% profit with all those overheads on a £10 (cost) item.... not a good model at all - so in that sense I can't see how your figures are helping anyone.

As I said before, the secret to Selling is in the Buying.

Some folk have to learn the hard way re making losses as with everything else in life - I doubt eBay gives a fig about that - they are weeding out again....

Now their Business model I would like to see! (but never will!)

    .

edit: eBay do not take too much - ask them! Their Business model will be vastly different to yours even in its most basic form.

Never having sold anything on Feepay (I used to be a buyer there many years ago) I don't know diddly about how the selling end works, but even as a buyer I used to wonder how sellers made any money, especially on lower priced items, though I suspect the fees years ago weren't what they are now, so it just might have been possible to make some money back then. With all the fee increases over the years, I can't imagine the small sellers are doing well at all on Feepay these days, though seller prices have definitely increased, no doubt to pay off the Feepay machine. IMHO Feepay no longer have the best deals online, as they did in years past, at least in the jool department; nowadays you can find nicer stuff on eBid, Etsy and Ruby Lane for similar prices, so why anyone still buys (or sells) on Feepay is beyond me.

Best wishes for many sales to all,

The answer to that question is fairly simple

Sellers list on the other side because they have the footfall

Buyers go there to buy because they will have a selection to choose from and stand a good chance of finding what they want
