    What i've seen:
My landlord resisted my suggestion that he check-out ebid for his Superman collectables,
because he expected to need Euros and shipping from the UK. ... a hastle.

The folks that regestered my .info domain in 1999 (face to face in their office), strongly recomended a .com instead.
Commercial sites NEED to be .com in their view. Anything else is fringe, not serious business.
(I think you know that ebid.com was taken)
I've never heard anyone say .com was the US domain. Only that everything is about commerce here.

Even comix fans looking for my UGcomix.info site, will type in UGcomix.com.
(UGcomix.com is now owned by GoDaddy, which thinks i'm gonna pay them to get it back.
Fat Chance. I never wanted anything other than .info)

None of that is chauvinistic. They just have their heads up their butts.
I think the ebid not being .com is definitely a factor at why it's not capturing more market share. The other being lack of professional advertising. Professional advertising may take a lot of money but often time it is worth it if done right.

Not being .com has not prevented the Belgian auction site from reaching one million members. I wonder whether the obsession with .com is an American obsession. It is noticeable that both the River and TOS have .com addresses for USA customers and .co.uk for British customers. A .com address is often attached to American sites. Perhaps .net could be regarded as a more international suffix.

Yeah, Mr. 41, i get ya.
You have a dim view of us yanks.
    We're obsesed with commercialism.
    And .com means Comerical,
    So it must be American.

I believe the domain name system was invented here.
Which may be why the commericial .com is a TOP LEVEL domain.
But nobody planted a flag on it.
If UK sites prefer .co.uk, it is THEIR nationalism, not ours.
(.co.us and .us DO exist, but nobody cares)
And this only came up out of YOUR national bias.

If TLDs were invented somewere else, there would still be a .com
but it would probably stand for COMmunication.

    Anyone...

What would be the Top Level Domains if they were invented somewhere else?
    Or if invented by you?

    dot.home
    dot.family
    dot.social
    dot.fun
    dot.food
dot.sex ... oh wait, i think that does exist.
    dot.tv does exist.

The .com element would only be a nicety - nothing more. Wouldn't contribute anything other than removing an excuse sellers use thinking that it matters.

It has been 10+ years since I saw anyone use the address bar to go any website, typing directly into the address bar (or url bar) was made redundant by search engines. If anyone is verbally told to check out eBid - then they just type eBid into a search engine. About 1% will indeed put eBid.com into a search engine - which is not a problem, if they then can't work out which is the selling/buying site from the search results then I would worry about them.

It is now 2015 and the .com element is completely irrelevant. In 1996 it would have been fairly important but the internet has developed since then.

I won't quote the whole post, but I agree 100%. Can't see where it matters that this site is .net

    Hay, Cool. You're right.
I tried ebid in firefox. No dot.anything.
Not only did ebid.net come up first.
But also when i typed ugcomix without dot.info
My dot.info site came up first.
(ahem.. I'm a leader in my field)

Just to be clear: the dot.net was not MY objection.
But i DO think a name change is necessary for the US market.
    For two reasons:
    (1) Ebid sounds like an ebay typo.
    (2) Ebid implys bidding and auctions, which is ONLY 20% of the current market (and dropping), and auctions repel most people..
(Even Priceline.com has abandoned auctions and bidding.)

    I like "The Yard"
As in a yard sale, and does not imply auctions only
Yard.com is underused. Only a blank landing page and a privacy policy page. Probably for sale.
Yard.net is only a For Sale page.

    It was .tv

If you enter www.ebid.tv then you still end up here.

The .com would be nice - just to complete the set. It is not worth what is being asked for it, though.

    Hi.

Is our OP still present? Are they the prolific eBid Newbie Seller who has ventured back to the Dark Side? Hope not. eBid needs many more examples of successful sellers.

eBid also needs more sellers who are willing to take risks and break out of the safety mode of selling. My favorie form of buying has always been bidding, with low start prices and attractive shipping cost. Hard to do this on eBid, without getting skinned. That needs to change. Convinced more than ever that buyer attitudes play a keen role in why this situation exist here.

With all the eBay users making there way here, it would make sense to some degree, that this would be enough to change buyer attitudes here. It does not appear to be so. Perhaps there are so many sellers who do not seem able to sell here, that they would even bypass exceptional buying opportunities in hopes of eliminating competition.

Competition is healthy among sellers; controlling the playing field is not healthy. It will not result in the type of growth that some have voiced wanting to see for eBid. Just my opinion.
