Thread: Not the brightest crayon in the box

  1. #1

Default Not the brightest crayon in the box

Item listed for auction on eBid - current bidding is at £35.88 - reserve not met.

The bids were placed on the 15th June.

The seller has added a note to the listing - has the 'added by seller' bit which carries the date June 17th and states that the item is no longer available.

It is no longer available because the damn thing was sold by them on the bay on the 16th June. It was sold by taking an offer of £28.00!

    Timeline of the item........

15th June - bids on eBid to £35.88
16th June - gets an offer of £28.00 on the bay and accepts it.
17th June - adds note to the eBid item that it is no longer available.

You just can't make it up - utter stupidity! (with a few expletives removed).

No fees as the reserve wasn't quite met on here. I was a little bit tempted to trigger it so they would get fees charged. I certainly would have bid if the original bidder (one of your return customers) had met the reserve - better for them to have been outbid rather than have them leave eBid because of one poor seller and cost other sellers sales.

    sigh. So frustrating.

And I went to buy something in early June from a seller I'd bought from before. Still no response, despite many messages to them.
Does this happen on other sites?

Listing fees stop this from happening on the other side. But they also ensure that I never list during the summer unless they give me free listing and, as a result, I list stuff here all summer with the intention that it will be there to sell when the buyers come back indoors but, somehow, much of it sells before then.

    Makes perfect eBay seller sense.

Sell for £28 on eBay with 13.5% eBay/Paypal fees and end up with £24.22 rather than selling for £35.88 (possibly more as the listing was still running) and pay 5.6% eBid/Paypal fees and get £33.87. After all, why bother making almost £10 extra for zero effort.

I have seen this mentality with both eBay buyers and sellers before, it is obviously a requirement. My best experience of this mentality was as a seller on there. I had some internal PIR's. My BIN was £7.99 but as I had to buy 500 to get a good price I used to have one a day on an auction starting at £5.99. One of the auctions was bid up to £22, which I accepted as if they are stupid enough to offer almost three times the price they frankly deserved to pay it. But as there was an under-bidder at £21 and another at £17 I sent them both a chance to buy, and they both accepted. I did feel slightly guilty, but if they are daft enough to not bother at least looking at other listings my guilt was slightly reduced, even more so when the money was spent on alcoholic beverges.
