Only when you know the number coming in, or can control the flow to fit currently available services, can there be any hope of a 'plan'.

The plan needs to be for years ahead and not just reacting to the current situation. Even if the money were available (which it is not) it takes years to plan, build, recruit, train, etc. Services do not just magically appear overnight.
But you cannot know in advance what the birth rate will be in a years time. Money is available and there would be more if our government collect the taxes which are due from multinationals. Also the NHS does not collect fees due from EU governments for treating their citizens because our government covers the cost anyway so why would the NHS bother. Other EU governments collect the fees for treating our citizens.

Why do polling stations still provide pencills to mark your X. Any official application form must be filled in using black ink

If you know how many people are coming in then you can estimate the likely birth rate, though it is a figure you can never exactly predict (until you need a license to breed ). Without control of the numbers then you cannot even make an estimate.

I agree with you about tax collection and non-collection of NHS charges, so no argument there. They are just two of the many things wrong with the way the country is run, but until the political system is changed then other things will not change; we remain stuck with incompetents running the country - whichever party is in power.

I've also voted, but I'm not going to reveal which way.

    Just a heads up...

I'll be closing this thread at 22:00 tonight. It will have served the purpose it was created for and I don't want it used after the result by either side to crow over or berate the other - start your own thread if you really feel the need to do that.

I'd like to thank the vast majority for conducting the discussion of a highly polarised subject in a civilised manner. There was the odd person that couldn't defy their nature and resorted to abuse and insults, but thankfully the thread did not get deleted by admin (to be honest, I didn't expect it to survive the course when I started it ).

Whatever the result we all hope it turns out to be the right one - and that none of us has to beg the forgiveness of future generations.

So thank you all again, and with that I sign off.

Apparently, it's partly because if the voting forms get wet ink tends to run, whilst pencil doesn't, that's one of the reasons I read recently. I took a black ink pen when I voted this morning and hope if papers get wet the ink won't run.

I'll be glad when this is all over, whatever the result. I've missed my pink butterfly avatar and my store advertising in my signature, it's been in a good cause though.

    Well done, Mel.
I didn't want to be the cause of this thread being closed, so I had to sit on my hands when it was posted that contributors to this thread were 'stupid'.
It must be wonderful to be so intellectually superior that anyone who disagrees with you, you can feel justified in making make gratuitous, unpleasant remarks.
It's one of the reasons so few people bother to contribute to threads - life is already difficult, why add to daily frustrations with yet more unpleasantness?
    Shame on such arrogance.
