Even on tonight’s David Dimbleby debate, people on the panel are prepared to mislead the public on EU matters on national television.
To give one example, the reference to the five Presidents of the EU – namely that they are unelected and that the British electorate cannot get rid of them.
One of the five Presidents is the President of the EuroGroup. The EuroGroup is made up of the Finance Ministers of the countries whose currency is the Euro. They meet to discuss ongoing issues related to the Euro. They do not have any political decision making authority within the EU as the EuroGroup but do advise the EU Council of Ministers on all matters Euro and make recommendations to the Council. The point at which democracy is applied is in the EU Council of Ministers where the political decisions are made by representatives democratically elected in the Member States.
None of the members of the EuroGroup are specifically elected to the Group but it would be extraordinary if Finance Ministers from the countries using the Euro were not consulted with over Euro issues.
The Dutch Finance Minister heads up the EuroGroup and as such he has the title President of the EuroGroup. But he has no EU political decision making authority. The title President of the EuroGroup is just a job title for an adviser who chairs meetings, not the title of a political decision maker. It is quite inappropriate, therefore, to suggest that there is a problem with this position because the British cannot get rid of the post holder.
The economic performance and unbalanced economy of the UK mean that the UK cannot join the Eurozone even if it wanted to adopt the Euro because it does not meet the joining criteria and is never likely to meet the joining criteria anytime in the foreseeable future. Why do the Leave people think that the UK should be able to get rid of the President of the EuroGroup when we do not use the Euro and are not part of EU Council of Ministers decision making about the Euro? To my mind this is just more of the smoke and mirrors we have seen all the way through this Referendum Campaign where the public are misled and end up with incorrect impressions about how the EU works if they do not do their own research.
Shame on all of our so called political leaders who have behaved like this.
