its a difficult one buttons so much depends on the rise, feel the machine on the out side when its doing the rising bit, if its cold , try the old fashioned way, the yeast could be old try some fresh stuff, I don't mean the live yeast you can buy, mix the yeast with warm water let it stand in a warm place for the correct time , its all trial and error till you find what best works for you, merry Christmas

the hole in the bottom is made by the bread paddle when you knock the loaf out the hole is left were the paddle was, some times the paddle will say inside the loaf which means digging it out, if you get a bread maker don't let the loaf cool down in the machine after its cooked leave it ten mins then knock it out otherwise it sweats, put it on a cake cooling grill,

when I hand made bread I knocked it back twice to get best results just takes longer,

This is a loaf of the smallest size from my Panasonic SD 2501 - I always make that size because it comes out more loaf shaped. When we cut into it and reach the paddle hole, I'll photograph that as well. P.S. the butter is for scale!

Here is the middle of the loaf with the paddle hole - it varies depending on where the paddle stopped.
The best buys on which are Panasonics or Lakeland (top 6 are those two brands) Cheapest is Lakeland My Kitchen Breadmaker

Thank you Madelaine, i would go for the Panasonic not sure wick one though, i did see the stainless one dents so just two to choose from but they look as though the all do the same job apart from adding yeast and i will be using ready mix anyway so that does not matter really.

I used to have a bread maker, but it only made a small loaf the half the size of a normal loaf so no use to me....
