Such a terrible shame. All that wonderful history destroyed after surviving for so long.

I am horrified. I learned of t this evening at church where we were having a Reconciliation Service ( a version of what people often call "confession"). I first visited Notre Dame de Paris 64 years ago and have been back many times since then; a truly beautiful and inspiring Cathedral. The damage done in th revolution was bad enough...but the scale of this appears much worse. I pray that none of those fighting the fire are injured.

This of, course, is Holy Week (started with Palm Sunday, which was yesterday) and we use candles as if there's no tomorrow during various services this week. My first thought was that this might have been a cause, but they said the fire began ob the roof. I cannot imagine there being candles in use there. So many beautiful statues and paintings at risk though - such a terrible loss.

From today's news it looks like the sofa might be used for other stuff as

"A number of companies and business tycoons have pledged hundreds of millions of euros between them towards the restoration effort."

It's good to see the restoration positivity in today's BBC News.

...and I dont think the RC church is exactly short of a bob or two.

Any money down the back of the sofa wouldn't be available for use in this country.
