Question A question that has divided more people than brexit

I have a question here that when I ask it has always caused division and more arguing than Brexit yet is completely ignored by all media outlets.

I am sorry but this may cause offence but I have to ask his question.

Cream tea is it cream then jam on the scone or jam then cream.

Haha! I don't know, but would be willing to do a taste test for you! To paraphrase Will Rogers,.............I never met a cream tea scone I didn't like.

Cream tea is it cream then jam on the scone or jam then cream.
Being half Devonian by birth, and half Cornish by birth, I can categorically tell you that the Devon way is the more sensible i.e. Cream on the bottom (like butter) and jam on the top. The Cornish, eat theirs arse about face - jam on the bottom, cream on top. Either way, it has to be clotted cream. Not whipped, or even more abominable, the squirty stuff.

But, even more perplexing than the method of eating, is the pronounciation of said scone: scone, or scon. Well, of course, one wouldn't spell it scon, so why would it be pronounced so?

Does it matter? If you don't like the way it is prepared just turn it up-side-down and then it is the way you like it.

As I mentioned in an earler post to a different thread: I recently attended a cream tea organised for charity by the C.W.L. It's all very simple really:

Each table had two plates of scones (to rhyme with "gone"); one plate was fruited and the other plain. There were a butterdish, two dishes of clotted cream, two bowls of strawberries and two dishes of strawberry jam. Refills were available as needed.

As each person helps himself, there is no problem; in fact none of us debated this at the time...we simply chatted about everything under the sun except the sequence of lading the scones!

There is NO problem here at all - nothing to debate!!

No, not a problem, just an interesting and humorous insight into culture here in the UK.

I like the idea of just flipping it over - you could have alternating bites if you were so inclined!

It's like those who insist that milk should go into the teacup first; claiming that they can taste the difference. In a blind test, though, they cannot.

There was probably a reason for doing it in 'days of yore' when it prevented boiling water shattering delicate porcelain cups.

Very true, Astral! Only those who could afford such porcelain had the time to debate it. Those who used a navvie's mug had things to do with their time!
