Thread: Wildlife Pond

  1. #1

    Default Wildlife Pond

    Hi All,

My enforced incarceration project has been building a small wildlife pond which is now completed.
Sod's Law, we have had no rain in the last couple of weeks so I have been filling with spring water - cheapo from supermarket. However, this is far too expensive and the pond is only one-third full and beginning to evaporate.
Does anyone have a little pond that they fill with tap water (shock! horror!) and have there been any ill effects?

    Thank you

ps - No Google links please - I have explored them all.

Oh, dear! none of us seem to be able to help.

I would have thought that the chlorine would disperse quite quickly. Is there anyone living there yet?

When I dug my pond a few years ago, I used tap water with no Ill effects, within a few days it began to be populated with newts, water boatmen, pond skaters and probably other things that I've forgotten about.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Your post is very encouraging both on the tap water and population front

There is no sign of any amphibians at the moment but I guess I shall have to be patient (not one of my virtues). Probably too late for spawn this year, anyway.

    Hi Madelaine,
    Sorry, didn't see your post.

Yes, that is the thought of some Google postings but others say not to use. However, having now ready NuttyKraft's post, I shall top up the foot or so of rainwater with tap water. Ours if quite soft so, hopefully, it will not too much harm to any froggy residents. (when, and if).

When we built our pond we filled it with tapwater to no ill effects. Keeping the neighbours cat off was the biggest problem.

Yes, we did Gale force winds, too. Very strange weather. Certainly didn't get the blue skies and sunshine promised for yesterday.

I rescued bees from a bowl in my garden - I think everything is very thirsty (after a winter of solid rain)
