No, you are NOT going to die from bird flu.

I want to make that very clear.

The only way you could possibly die from bird flu would be if you lived with a live, infected bird.

Bird flu will NOT kill fifty thousand people.

You do NOT have to worry about bird flu.

The POSSIBLE problem, IF it happens, would be from a form of the flu which "evolves" or mutates from the bird flu into a NEW form of flu.

It would only be the NEW form of flu that could be a problem if it starts to transmit from human to human.

It'll be airbourne, I spose, like other flu strains.

If only it WAS as simple as avoiding eating chicken

You do NOT need to stop eating chicken, eggs or any other commonly eaten bird meats.

Same as always, just make sure that you cook the meat properly and there will be no risk to you or your families.

The bird flu can only harm people who are in very close contact with live and infected birds (or their sh1t very soon after it arrives).

The reality is that nobody knows for sure if there will be a problem for humans at all. These flu pandemics do happen usually around every thirty years or so - so we are due for one in theory.

However, with the new technologies we have for creating vaccines, it is anyone's guess how many people might die IF such a pandemic occured.

I've noticed that ITV in particular are quoting the higher guesses and making this appear much scarier than it need be.

    BUT

It could happen - the virus could mutate so that human to human infection took place.

It could infect tens of millions of people round the world.

Lots of those who were infected would die.

There would be severe effects on "normal" society.

But only if a pandemic occurs.

Until then, don't live in fear. Research the normal methods for avoiding the normal type of flu and make sensible preparations. Then just get on with life as normal.

So you've never heard of the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic then?
That one killed upto 50 million people worldwide and that was before the days of mass global transport which could aid the rapid spread of the illness.

You are right that we now have better technologies for creating vaccines. However, we cannot create a suitable vaccine until the flu virus has mutated into its deadly form and begun infecting people. Creation of the vaccine would then take approximately four months. At that point every country in the world will want millions of doses and that will take years to produce and distribute.

Add to that problem that with modern transportation systems the new virus could be spread around the globe in under a week.

Don't get complacent. IF a pandemic occurs things will get bad very quickly and people need to understand what could happen and how they would need to deal with it.

It isn't about living your life in fear. It's about recognising the possible danger and being aware of how to deal with it.
