Thread: How would you get out?

  1. #1

Default How would you get out?

Just been a fire near us and all got out with some help from others as they were elderly (60+)

Things like this just make me think "how would I get out" and more importantly how would I get the kids out first?

Yes we have a fire plan but things like this make you think.

Personally I do in a way. OAP in UK means over 60 (bus pass age) and as people live on average 3 score & 10 (70) I think 60 being classed as elderly is not too far fetched.

I'm sorry if this offended you

I thought the same way when I was young, but it looks younger all of the time! lol

You didn't offend me, I just thought it was funny from my vantage point.

I am approaching 60 faster than I care to think, but I still think of it as old.

    Do practise home fire drills.

I've done this and it's scary just how long it takes to get out of your house in the dark. The best time to do a drill is in the early hours - when it's dark and everyone is disorientated. Don't tell anyone it's a drill. Just go to bed as normal. Set your alarm for 2 am, then get everyone up and out of the house as fast as you can - in the dark (don't turn any lights on). Time how long it takes. You should be aiming to have everyone outside in 3 mins. It's worth doing - and it could save your life.

    What a good idea Ruthie.
I must admit I am used to doing the drill at work, but haven't thought about it at home

I never panic about things , so I think I would calmly get together & do it, don't believe in panicking always makes things worse.
I appreciate not everyone is like this so sorry if I offend anyone just MO.

er... there is a danger in not telling people it's a drill, surely? Effectively you are training them not to believe you when you tell them its an emergency.

"Quick, out, the house is on fire!"
"Yeah, sure Mum, that's what you said last time <snore>."

It's amazing how many people do not have a fire extengizer in their house to put out a common stove fire. Have something to nip the problem in it's bud stage might save your house also.
