Thread: Those free CDs you get with computer magazines

  1. #1

Default Those free CDs you get with computer magazines

Do you remember those free programs and demo disks you got with computer magazines?

I have stacks of them, about 10 years old, for PC.

Does anyone know if they sell easily. Are they the sort of things people might still use or collect for nostalgic reasons.

I am wondering if it is worth taking the time to list them here, sell them at a car boot or dump them.

I would think that selling them online would be frowned at. Might get away with it at a Car Boot though.

Most of them are marked as "Not for resale".
Besides, who is going to want software that's ten years old?

I am curious why that would be, it is my property, which I am free to sell. I paid for the magazine. Some are marked "not to be sold separately" but that is aimed at the
    newsagent.

I have seen Amiga magazines 'free' disks devoured up hungrily by collectors, on the other side. Curious to know whether the same goes for PC disks.

Damien, I often pick up software that is over 10 years old at the car boot for a variety of reasons, nostalgia, usefulness, unavailability.

Just as a PS, I shouldn't have used the term 'free' in the thread title, I should have said included with.

I've seen old CDs used in many craft projects. You might want to put a post on the craft section and see if anyone would be interested.

You could market them as cat scarers

I give mine to a man who refurbishes and rebuilds computers for those who cannot afford them - he likes older software for older processors. Some third world charities make use of them for the same sort of purpose.

you can sell them.. but I wouldn't think most of them are worth the effort of listing.

One category that does sell - I know, I buy them - are music-related, especially those containing samples.

Generally, though, the resale value doesn't seem to be that great - you can generally pick up a whole bunch for a couple of quid.

There is a market for those program discs, just the same as there is a market for early computers, other gadgets and 'vintage' computer magazines. Some of the older games are hard to source so when they turn up in boxes at the local bootfair I've noticed that they are usually snapped up quite quickly. They don't fetch much though.

oh I remember the ones, Microsoft encarta- back in the days when the world was still flat and the wheel was square, isnt it amazing how fast things have progressed in the computer world yet it took hundreds of years for simple things to take on- FRIGHTENING really.
