What would you suggest would be the best way to get high search rankings for your site? pay per click, expensive search engine submision sites, free ones?
OR all the above.
Just interested to see what other people do with theirs.
Thanks

Not really my field but I understand that the best way to come higher in search engine results it to be linked to by external sites. The more sites that reference yours the higher you will appear.
Thanks for your input Mel x
I use Google Adwords pay per click, have done for a couple of years, but it costs maybe ten to twenty times more than the business it generates.
Would be interesting to see what anyone else thinks.
A specialist model shop near me used the google pay per click and they nearly went out of business.
It cost them £12,000 for one month.
.
While you are here please check out my shops and auctions.
Thanks.
Dan.

I've tried google adwords a couple of times, and both were failures. Somebody other than Google might be making money out of them, but I don't know how.
I've used a couple of reciprocal link sites and webrings, but to be honest, they haven't brought anything in.
I have my website with site provider where they ask for keywords to submit them to the major search engines, but I don't think that does much either.
I've found that the best way to attract people to your website is to place an advert in an appropriate magazine relative to the products you are selling. In my own case it's Classic car magazines. It can be very cost effective! You can usually place a 1/8th of a page advert for £30 - £60.
If you specialize in a certain product? May I suggest that before taking the plunge as regards to placing an actual advert, get it touch with the appropriate magazine relative to your product and ask if they will do a feature or a mention on their "New products" page with the view of placing future adverts with them. They are usually very helpful, after all, they also want the extra business.

My mate who runs his own air rifle forum tried Google adsense for 6 months and made the grand total of just under a fiver. lol. He took them off his forum but one of his members PMed him and asked why he'd taken them off, he explained that it wasn't worth having them on because the returns were so small. The lad told him about some software that you can buy which makes it easier for the search engine spiders to go deeper into your forum and attract more visitors. My mate read up about it and decided to buy it and try, his number of hits have gone up several thousand per month and his Google rating has increased and now he makes approx a fiver a day from Google adsense, which more or less covers his £300 a year running costs for the forum. I'm not sure if the software would work for websites though?, I think it was just for forums.
Going by the number of members and visitors to my mates site I think eBid must do pretty well from Google adsense, although obviously their running costs will be massive.

That's very interesting, thanks. Adsense is the thing that puts adverts onto your site (or your mate's forum) and I don't have any problems with it... though I don't make any money either! But I think that's down to the low traffic I get (and expect).
The adwords thingy I was talking about is the one where the little ads come up at the side of google searches to direct viewers to your site... or not.
