Sadly, they killed it.
Yes, unfortunately they did. This is the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake. Largest of the breed. We have them in south Georgia. Fairly common, but this one was extrordinarily large. I wish they had captured it and put it in a zoo or released it in the wild. Most people don't have much sympathy with snakes though.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The trappers who caught and killed a giant rattlesnake in St. Johns County said the snake was 7 feet 3 inches long.
Experts said it's one of the biggest rattlesnakes they've ever seen.
Maybe it got so big by eating mall food. Would have made superb overnight mall security with a few signs posting its presence to warn off would-be burglars. Security could have inserted redundant locator chips in the snake so they could retrieve it every morning.
