Any tips on a good free spyware scan?

I've been browsing around looking for a good free spyware download, since my free one is now trying to charge £3 a month.
Anyone any recommendations?
I installed Ad-aware okay, but it wouldn't start up due to some damaged files in my system, so had to uninstall again. I have the ntl PC Guard, which is supposed to be free with all packages, but anti-spyware and some other features have switched off since an update.
I'm not paying £3 a month for something which is supposed to come free, and little more than useless any way.

I'll look up windows defender. I have lots of problems trying to install files.
Need a new system, but money is too tight to buy one.

If you have ever used AVG you need to remove every last file as they will try and switch off your antispy ware and recommend themselves.

Put AVG in search all files and remove all that you can see -

Then restart your PC go to your spyware programme and switch the features back on.

I 2nd that - use it every day - mainly to get rid of cookies.

Try using something other than AVG and see what happens.
