Is this meant to happen? Doesn't matter where they click the link from (eg twitter, email etc)

Yes, the short URLs provided earlier this year just redirect to the original addresses. Be nice if they didn't, but it's clearly intentional - the quickest way of providing short URLs I imagine.
We're working on getting this fixed. We plan to make all store pages have storename.ebid.net in the URL
