Thread: Laptop problem.

  1. #1

    Question Laptop problem.

Does anyone know what causes a laptop to no longer recognise the cd/dvd rewriter?

It doesn't even show up in the "Device Manager"

Might have an internal connection that has come loose or possibly the thing has just died.

First, update the driver. If still doesn't show up after having the latest driver, call for technical assistance if still available. Is the drive a pop-out drive or it takes DVDs in? If it's pop-out, it's easy to disconnect it and replace.

Think it may have died like poppa says. I have taken it out (only 1 screw) and plugged it back in hoping it would be recognised as new hardware. Obviously didn't work, and the driver is apparently up-to-date.

I've got anti-virus software from Norton which hasn't found any problems.

goto control panel and then on sytem select the hardware tab and then device manager if there are any little yellow signs then its a software problem if not sounds like you will need a new dvd drive

I had this on my sons laptop and cured it by:

    1. Turn off the laptop (and disconected the power!)

    2. Remove the cd/dvd drive (one screw on the bottom of the laptop needed to be removed and then the drive should slide out)

    3. Re start the laptop, let everything load, then shut it down again.

    4. Reconnect the cd/dvd drive.

    5. Again re start the laptop, either it will re-appear or it will have 'found new hardware' and install on its own.

    Hope that helps.
