Thread: Drama subcategory for books

  1. #1

    Default Drama subcategory for books

I just spotted the response to my original request in a closed thread:

    http://www.ebid.net/forums/showthrea...gory-for-books

The response: "After reviewing eBay and Amazon we have added Film/TV Adaptations as a sub category - pending server reset." This makes no sense at all and has nothing to do with my request. Not all books in the 'Drama" genre are made into movies.

What I asked for is a new subcategory: Books/Fiction/Dramas

I gave some book titles as examples of "Dramas" (a recognized book subcategory on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and eBay, by the way). I did this to illustrate that motion pictures made from these books can be listed on eBid under Movies & DVD/Dramas. Some other subcategories in eBid's Movies & DVD section are Horror, Romance, and Science Fiction. These same subcategories are listed in Books/Fiction. If a subcategory is valid in Movies, it must also be a valid subcategory in Books/Fiction.

Right now, the only category that can be used for fictional drama is Books/Fiction/Literature, Modern
This category has 2,743 books in it and it appears to be the dumping ground. I found science fiction, romance, horror and dramas. I love books and I love browsing, but I won't be tackling that category.

Again it's the UK US thing, Drama is NOT a recognised category for books on ebay uk or Amazon UK

    Because Drama is a performance.

Then why does eBid break out movies into so many subcategories? By your definition, every movie that is not a documentary is a performance, hence a "drama".

I took a peek at the movies in DVD/Dramas. They are the kind of subject matter I consider to be a "drama", whether it's in a book, a movie, a play at a theater, or a performance on television.

I've seen quite a few threads from sellers wondering why their books aren't selling. It's quite possible one reason is that U.S. buyers are not finding what they want because of the U.K./U.S. difference.

I for one am not going to look for books in that huge category, there are just too many that are NOT dramas. And for the record, I bought about 25 used books in a store here in San Diego last month. I will not spend hours going through thousands of unsorted listings. I don't go in looking for a specific title, I go in looking for books by subject. The book store has everything separated by genre, and I found these in their "Drama" shelf.

I have another thread discussing the fact that no U.S. buyer will ever find Playboy Magazine here. There are hundreds of them listed, but for all practical purposes they're invisible. Maybe European buyers know the rules and can find them, but U.S. buyers will look for them in Men's Magazines. eBid told me in no uncertain terms that Playboy has to be listed in the Adult section. I didn't bother.

If eBid truly wants to attract U.S. buyers, a bit of flexibility may be required. I don't understand the resistance to adding one subcategory that might attract more U.S. book buyers.
