I also think this needs sorting.
I've always thought it looked a bit odd having just a header and no subcategories. It gives the appearance that there is nothing in the section unless you already know that the header is a clickable link. First impressions for newbies coming in to browse are really important.

The higher page (http://uk.ebid.net/buy/) displays the aggregate count for that category. It is only when you open up a category (e.g. http://uk.ebid.net/buy/art/) and a subcategory of that main category has no subcategories itself that is might look misleading as to listing counts.
It rather depends on what you view that second page as. If you take it as displaying those sub-subcategories, then the info is correct. It is only those subcategories that stand alone that make the page look a bit odd. If they all had sub-subcategories then it wouldn't be an issue.
Simplest solution would be to include the aggregate count next to each subcategory, e.g:
Posters (1223 Listings)
Antique (Pre 1900) (1)
Contemporary (1990 to Now) (504)
Modern (1900 to 1989) (189)
Other (529)
