I got so sick of people trying to sell me stuff I didn’t want or wanting me to do a survey, I get at least 20 calls a week (and I’m registered with TPS), that I now screen my calls. My ansaphone message tells people politely to please leave a message but that if they are doing a survey or selling something to simply hang up.

I figure that if it is a potential customer they will actually leave a message and I can phone them back.

Actually it’s also worth googling your business name. I was shocked to see just where my business was being listed. I closed one of my businesses earlier this year and I have spent the last 6 weeks or so trying to get my business deleted from these directories. I personally only ever listed myself with Yellow Pages but it’s amazing where your data gets sold. Yellow Pages never actually gave me any business leads only grief with the many sales calls/surveys over the years. It takes time to remove yourself but it seems to be working.

Tried and tested way of getting rid of this one. Ask them which PC is reporting the problems as you have 3 of them. It seems that the report that my PC sent them, despite providing them with my name (mispelled), my address and telephone number, somehow managed to not send any details of its problems (other than "it is running slowly") or anything to identify the PC. Funny that, eh? Once they've squirmed a little, ask them if they have your home address details and when they confirm it, request that a paper copy of the report be sent to the address.

As much as I enjoyed that particular call, my own favourite was from a UK based call centre trying to get me to re-organise my debts. Being slightly bored at that particular time I kept the guy on the phone for about 20 minutes telling me all about the product and getting him to explain in great detail what it was all about. After deciding that this was definitely the product for me, he had to ask a few questions. They went along the lines of:

How much credit card debt do you have?
None!
Do you have any secured loans?
No!
Do you have any unsecured loans?
No!
Have you taken out any payday loans?
No!

After a few more of these his final question was:

You're having a laugh, aren't you?
Yes!

I tell them I don't have a computer - there's no answer to that, so they hang up super fast!

They are human and they probably realize they're annoying to almost everybody. That has to be bad for their self-respect.I feel sorry for them too, but at least they're employed. When they launch into their longwinded spiel, carefully rehearsed to have no pauses allowing for polite input by me, i interrupt and say "I'm going to hang up now. Goodbye". I figure that shouldn't enrage or depress anybody and it's just as fast as a more entertaining performance.

If they ask for OH I tell them to hang on while I fetch him then just leave them hanging on until they get fed up

If they ask for me I say I'm not in.

I do not get any calls from any call centers from anywhere in the world. They say it takes 28 days blah blah for whatever, so there is obviously an international list of some kind that your number is removed from as not all call centers are in the UK/Ireland. So if it has no effect, then it must be harry potter magic for my number to not be on lists on the Indian sub-continent and other places in the world.. Oh the bliss I have from being registered with TPS...

We are registered with the TPS but it is the 'research' calls which are the problem. The TPS have no jurisdiction against them.

I as so fed up with getting calls every day last week, that I told them the houseowner was in prison.
