if they are inexpensive items would people be willing to pay the extra pound for recorded? I just offer standard as lots of my items cost under a £1 so £2 postage would make them wildly expensive for what they are

Please have a look. I combine postage wherever possible.
You can always offer both and leave it to the buyer to decide.

In my experience the recorded (signed for) option is a complete waste of money, it offers no protection at all. I know people who work for Royal Mail and from what I am told once the recorded post is in the system it is just mixed in with the ordinary mail and theoretically plucked out at the delivering office so that it might be signed for. I say "might be" as we had one incident where I was delayed in getting to the door and as I approached the glass doors coming down the stairs saw the walk man signing the book to confirm delivery. I reported this to the office who took a very dim view of it (or so they said) as it was against their rules. Also had another instance where £50+ worth of film was just dumped on the step, luckily i found the package before it was stolen. Another problem is that they frequently deliver the item without getting a signature for it.

Recorded delivery is an absolute waste of money, on too many occasions no signature will be sought and in too many cases the system will simply tell you that the package is processing through the system.
In addition many buyers....me included dislike recorded delivery and will pass up a listing that states that this is the the delivery method as i am not at home to sign for the package and instead will move on to a seller who offers standard delivery.
Your listings will also carry a high shipping charge which again will send buyers running.
If you feel that the items that you are selling are going to attract thieves then maybe it may be useful.
Others that i know add a degree of self insurance self insurance by way of adding 20p to the shipping cost and in the event of loss this will cover the issue once enough sales have been achieved.
The best thing that you can do is to ensure that all of your packages are clearly addressed both with the recipients address and youyr return address and adequately packaged and safe from water damage.
Doing this will assist all of your packages arriving at their destination.

MY ATTITUDE IS A RESULT OF YOUR ACTIONS!!!
IF YOU DONT LIKE IT BLAME YOURSELF.
As a seller, I prefer recorded delivery, due to the amount of scammers out there - especially on the bay- nowadays.
As a buyer I prefer it too because that way theres a tracking number floating around if anything goes haywire. I really do not mind popping into my local RM delivery office for things if I have been out when things have been delivered.
