retrieve info from EXT HD

My external HD has stopped working is there anyway of getting the information off it or what do I do, I don't have this info on my computer as I put it all on there when having a clean out one night.................yes I know a bit stupid but there you go.

After you finished transferring your info onto the external HD did you just pull the USB connection out of the computer or did you go to your toolbar and safely eject it? If you didn't eject it correctly that may be why you cannot now access your info, this happened to me.

I think I just turned it off with the computer. I have tried to re start the computer with it plugged in but even windows won't load then. I wouldn't even know but I need to print something I have stored on it.

Alternatives:

1. Check the power supply to the external drive
2. Restart the computer
3. Open computer, right click on the external drive and click open
4. Try on another external drive
5. Take the external drive to a computer repair shop
6. Smash the external drive with a sledge hammer

can't do 4 haven't got one YET.
5 not one you can trust in this area.
6 seems very likely as it will not give me the dang thing i want.

I took mine to a computer repair shop who doubted that they could get any information back, but that they would try. I declined, took it back home, and connected it once more, I did manage to get it open and I selected and sent what I could back to my computer and ejected it correctly. I thought everything was ok, but when I tried using it again, I was unable to save anything else to this HD, and bought a new one.

Give Bills suggestions a try, I wouldn't recommend no. 6 yet though.

That's what mine is and it went through a spell of not working - then one day I tried again, and it worked. Still using it to tansfer stuff between XP and new PC.

Maybe give it a rest, jiggle the connections about and try again.

Will give that a try Annie, everything seems to be working, like the donk when you plug it in and the tiny green light but there is no blue light, maybe it's having a bad day................it will have a worse one soon
