I like these sorts of debates. Because it then follows that it's not English mansion tax money that will be paying for Scottish nurses and is, in fact, UK taxes paying for UK nurses who just happen to be based in Scotland.

    Yes.

and if I as an Englishman thought that I needed, and could get better medical treatment in Scotland. I would have the right to move there, and thus have access to it.

Actually, due to the reciprocal arrangements between the NHS in Scotland and the English & Welsh NHS you could probably get treated without moving - although, whether your GP would be willing to incur the costs is probably a different story.

However... Why was it that so many English politicians and newspapers were outraged when Scottish Labour announced this policy of UK taxes funding UK nurses?

Why was it that so many English politicians and newspapers were outraged when Nigel Farage used the phrase "fifth column"

I think the simple answer is, as I believe you know.

    Because it suits their agendas.

A significant number of Scottish people really hate what one of the main English political parties represents because it is so in discordance with Scottish cultural values of social responsibility and sense of community and sense of fairness. That causes a big problem for Scotland when that party is in power at Westminster, and especially when UK Government by that party is in part bankrolled from taxation on Scottish oil. This is not the same thing as being oppressed. The only people who come out with the notion of oppression are the English who dismiss the SNP and calls for independence in Scotland as trivia and do not put in the effort to listen to and to engage with the debate going on north of the Border. For as long as the English perpetuate this notion of oppression and the Scottish chip on the shoulder and the Scottish victim mentality, there will never be a truly United Kingdom because the English will not be listening to and working in partnership with the Scots.
I didn't say that the SNP say they are oppressed by the English, but meant that the Scots do. As do the Irish, Welsh and others.

Nor do "the English perpetuate this notion of oppression" - we are the victims of the accusation.

The English might be reasonably accused of not giving enough regard to Scottish feelings, and to neglect when a bit of help would have gone a long way, through the agency of the Westminster Parliament. There have never been any active "oppression" - the Scots have always had as many rights as the English, and have been in a position the make change through Parliament, like the rest of us.

The notion that ordinary English people don't look upon the Scots as equals, and take active steps to make life difficult for them, originates north of the Border, not south.
