It is better to watch the full episode at:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-36017171

    The issue is as follows.

David Cameron owns a town house in Notting Hill and a large country house in Oxfordshire.

Under Parliament’s expenses rules, it is possible for some residential property mortgages to be claimed as expenses. The rationale for this is that many MPs need a constituency home and a London home to do their jobs and will be running a second home only because of their jobs. MPs can only claim for mortgage payments on one property, the one that they nominate as the second home that they need to undertake their duties as MPs.

The Oxfordshire home was purchased in 2001 which is when David Cameron first became an MP (for the Witney constituency in Oxfordshire). This looks like the second property that was purchased so he could conduct his duties as an MP.

The Notting Hill property was rented out after the Camerons moved into Downing Street.

The point that Dennis Skinner was making was that the £200,000 gift from his mother was spent on paying off the mortgage on the Notting Hill property for which David Cameron was not claiming mortgage expenses from Parliament. Dennis Skinner was asking why the present was not used to pay down the mortgage on the Oxfordshire property so that David Cameron could reduce his mortgage expenses claims from Parliament. While David Cameron has not broken any Partliamentary rules or broken any law by claiming for his Oxfordshire property, there is a question of ethics and morality and of what kind of leadership is he showing the country.

Additionally, David Cameron cannot claim mortgage expenses from Parliament for a property that he is renting out so can only claim mortgage expenses for the Oxfordshire property, thereby using the tax free residence in Downing Street to enable him to benefit from the high property rentals achievable in Central London for his Notting Hill house whilst also using the taxpayer to pay for some of his mortgage in Oxfordshire.

This on top of the fact that if his mother lives more than 7 years after the date of the gift it will be completely tax free and not subject to any inheritance tax. As it looks like his mother will still be alive after 7 years this comes in as a handy way of reducing the inheritance tax payable on her estate when she passes on.

As the Government Ministers are law makers in this country, it is important that Ministers have no conflicts of interests between their personal arrangements and the arrangements that they make for the country. This is why these issues of leadership around David Cameron are so important. At the moment, although he is not breaking any laws, the financial benefits from current arrangements are truly stacked in his favour which does not sit well against the backdrop of an austerity economy which is his personal choice and not an economic necessity.

cameron as far as i can see has done nothing wrong , he has paid all taxes due on declared income,he has claimed tax relief on a second property, so what, if the rules allow it , i doubt anyone here would not do so, if his mother had the spare cash to give as a gift , before she dies, so what, would anyone else refuse the cash ? she or he broke no rules, and is also common practice through out the uk,

this is a battle between politicians a classic left wing right wing battle, there doing themselves no favours or the country, at least some of them are standing up to the fact that personal income is a private matter, it is after all seen by the tax authorities,

as for cameron i do feel for the guy in this instant a income of around 200,000 notes a year is not a big deal in the scheme of things, and hes onwards of paying 2/3rds of half of it in tax, thats a big chunk of money hes earned,

the problem lies with taxation as a whole in this country, we are not only taxed at high rates , were taxed on almost every thing we buy, we are even taxed on advise we may receive, through a professional via VAT,

the current witch hunt to gain tax they deem has been evaded , comes around because the country is broke, along with half the rest of the world, sustained government and personal debt runs into trillions across the globe the USA alone has personal debt of trillions just in the private sector alone, the writing has been on the wall now for a few years, the first financial crash happened in 2008 , banks selling bad debt, on , that was clearly unsustainable, the after math was a bout of quantitative easing , printing money thats worthless, and artificially holding down interest rates, wars have been already fought because the west is broke, certain countries know the petrol dollar is artificially propped up,so when they try to move there economy away from the petro dollar, there attacked, you all know the BS reasons they give for destroying other countries, hidden agendas for broke countries to trade with other counties , basicly home markets destroyed and governments having to bow to corporate pressures, TTIP trade agreement for example, one of many,

the last two weeks has seen a small volcano erupt in are parliament, a real sign of how desperate those in the know are becoming, as the continents of debt and war keep grinding against each other were going to see a lot more volcanic activity across the world.

My posting yesterday was not quite correct.

The Camerons did have a property in Notting Hill when they purchased the Oxfordshire property.

What I did not know is that they later sold the Notting Hill property and purchased a replacement property in North Kensington. It is the North Kensington property that they are now able to rent out because they have the 10 Downing Street residence to live in.
