No use looking for your Google payments account Herbie as they stopped that quite a long time ago ! Thank you for the kind words about the Old Soldier.

I accept Bank Transfers. I am happy for anyone to pay money into my account whenever and as often as they wish.

Alas! Bank transfers are not economically feasible for me to accept in the USA at this time. However, the gross value of the item being purchased might affect that in the future.

    Welcome back!

I am one of the "others" who had direct debits set up on my account after agreeing to bank transfer so I would only accept it from people I know such as regular forum posters.

I didn't lose any money but it took me a working week of time to straighten things out. Funnily enough, I blame Nationwide, too. They broke the rules on direct debit mandates by setting it up without contacting me.

My apologies Madelaine, I was not bieng dismissive about you, I can't remember if Susan mentioned who else was caught up in the mess (if she did at all).

What amazed me about Nationwide's attitude was that they seemed gobsmacked that I had given details of my account to someone I did not know. Then I pointed out that exactly the same information would have been provided by me sending a "safe" cheque, actually they would also then have had a genuine signature to copy.

Then soon after this happened they were happily telling people that they would be phasing out the cheque books in favour of the safer more convenient bank transfer.

I have never had much faith in bank security since the partner of someone I worked with had his account scammed by false cheques. What made it even worse were that they (the partners) were well known at the branch so the problem should have been picked up by the bank staff.

    I didn't feel dismissed!

If I do accept a bank transfer, I give the details for a savings account where SO & DD don't exist.

What drove me crazy about Nationwide was that each time I wanted to discuss it, I had to queue up endlessly AGAIN. Also they made me change my account number which was a pain - everything had to be transferred and it was before the easy scheme came in

Plus they can't be drawn on, you can only transfer money from them to another account you own.
