Thread: Tesco to start selling own-brand software

  1. #1

Question Tesco to start selling own-brand software

OK, so by now you're happy to get your tinned food from them, you might also buy your petrol from them, or even your house insurance. But will you buy your computer software from Tesco?

Is this a good move on their behalf? Should Tesco be taking on the likes of Micro$oft and Symantec when it comes to office or security software?

What are your thoughts on this?

mixed thoughts on this one... they seem to be doing pretty well on the non-food consumables and petrol front... but then again so do Asda and Co.... software is a bit of leap though isn't it? I am not sure how much trust people would put into a grocery giant producing software? Stick to what you know tesco !

I suppose it would depend on Formjet's pedigree in the software manufacturing business. Do they provide software for anybody else or market it under their own name? Do their products have a good reputation? If so, I don't foresee problems buying the same stuff under Tesco's name.

They are listed on the stock exchange and seem to have a good track record with security and IT products.

I'm a bit wary, I would wait and see, but for now stick to the tried and tested.

I'd be a bit nervous about installing a Tesco Value Firewall and AV package.....

Looking at Formjets site they don't produce software just market it in various territories, presumably not penetrated the market very well and have now done a deal with Tesco. Of the software mentioned I've only heard of two of them, but I doubt Mickysoft is going to get in a sweat about this. Now if Tesco opened an auction Site under the Tesco brand that might be something, well in the UK at least.
