I would say that, if you've already got a network in place and the two PCs can talk to each other, all you need to do is plug your broadband modem into one PC and set it to share it's internet connection (Start > Connect to>Your ISP>Advanced>Internet Connection sharing). Then on the other PC, in Internet Explorer (for example) click Tools>Internet Options and choose to "Connect over LAN".
No need to buy additional hardware to share your internet connection. I did this last year when i bought my new PC and I connected to it my old PC using a cross-over cable to transfer my data between the two PCs.
