I've noticed that the problem visitors come from a very tight IP range, and those IPs also happen to be the only visitors doing multiple hits.

Banning the IP range may affect unfortunate innocents, but currently I really won't lose too many innocent bidders

Thanks I understand now. I have a hit counter on my 'about me' page- but haven't considered putting one on my auction templates. I'll go see who's been checking me out recently

Those of you not understanding the implications of Dynamic IPs may want to check out the PBL at www.spamhaus.com

input your current IP into the IP-checker in the left margin and see if you're on any of the public or resource blacklists

If you are, then go to www.buildaskill.com and search on "SMTP non-delivery" to find a range of articles and discussions regarding how IP blocking has split the internet into two - those in Microsoft's SenderID "club" and those who aren't

Some of you may find it explains why you don't receive end of auction emails from eBid

Once you've done that, then come back to this discussion and state if you still think the OP's idea is viable and/or a good idea.
