It's not really a "bad move", as such. With eBid.com already registered to someone else, it was impossible for G&M to do anything about it. It's not like they had the choice and then decided not to stump up the pennies to claim it for themselves.

You should pick a name that you can get all the domains for.

    Isn't hindsight wonderful
ebid dot com was already taken when the guys registered www.eBid.co.uk in Nov 1998, they didn't get dot tv or dot net until more recently, I'm sure the person with the com site would ask a ridiculous figure for it, the guys had to pay a four figure sum for dot net in 2005, so I'm sure they must have looked into buying the dot com at that time

Even if the present holder would sell it, the question is, do they pay out for that, or spend the money on the site in other ways, for example advertising?

I honestly dont think that Gazza and Mark would sell eBid.com to anyone least of all eBay.

Its pure twoddle from the start to the end.

eBid.net is better as .net is harder to promote than .com domain names.

Another good example of a thread that serves no purpose on here because it is factually incorrect and does nothing more than drive traffic to a different website. Thanks for that

Exactly right. Should be spending time on what you CAN do something about (like helping yourself to getting sales, listing more, emailing old buyers, etc etc) and leave things alone that are NOT in your control.

Are you people aware that there are rules against domain sitting
this means in the event your sitting on the domain name of an active company trading with that company name you can be get your domain name transfered to the company with that company name

ebid dot com was already taken when the guys registered www.eBid.co.uk in Nov 1998
If the domain .com was already taken when eBid set up their first website, would they still have a chance of claiming, or can you only claim if someone buys the domain after the business is set up?

Could eBid brand themselves slightly differently for the US market as a lot of people there assume a web address would have a .com? How about www.ebid-us.com - can anyone think of any good ones which haven't been taken?
