    Default A www. rut

My laptop has been running slow these past couple of days so I thought it best to clear my history

and there was loads .... but 95% of it was made up of the same 4 websites

Ebid ( of course , goes without saying )
Pokerstars ( I'm an avid poker player, I'm mid game as I'm typing this)
Craft forum ( I'm an equally avid beader)
    and
A Chatroom ( yes I'm female and I could talk the hind legs of a donkey)

so as you can see I think I've gone and got myself into a www.rut

which sites apart from Ebid do you use the most or are you a www.surfer???

You should clear out the prefetch folder too, found in the windows file. You'd be amazed how many megs you can clear up.

    Hi Jewel,

can I ask for clarification on clearing the 'prefetch' folder please? Are we talking about the Windows Prefetch folder, or one's Browser's Prefetch service?

(Explanation: The Windows Prefetch folder is a place were files that are needed regularly / recently are prefetched so that your common programs open and run faster. Clearing the Windows Prefetch folder will slow your computer down when it comes to opening your commonly used programs. Clearing it or leaving the folder alone has no danger though.

Some people have Browsers that prefetch web pages you *might* click on next! I use 'Google Web Accelerator' which works like this. Say I visit a web page, and it has 13 hyperlinks on it - Google Web Accelerator will actually download those 13 web pages, just in case I end up going to one of them next, which means it appears the next page loads faster for me. Because GWA is downloading the 13 pages while I read the open page, I don't notice this activity. The downloaded pages are saved in the GWA Cache which is [/i]automatically[/i] emptied when you close your browser, so that's safe n sound really. I do notice that if you keep your Browser open for a couple of days, the GWA Cache can become massive, and slow your computer down, so it is sensible to either close GWA or close your Browser every day at least.)

ah, OK, thanks for the clarification. I believe Windows Prefetch is designed to speed up the opening of common programs, so it seems best to leave that folder alone.
