I also was a victim from an unscrupulous buyer who insisted on using bank transfer but never paid and then set up direct debits on my account. My bank as well stated that I had to contact the other bank/vendor directly to find out who set this up - who then told me it was my banks responsibility. After an extremely frustrating week of calls and getting nowhere - I contacted the head office of my bank - made a formal complaint and then told them I was going to file a police report. While going through all of this I found out that my bank did not *vet* who was allowed to set up direct debits on my account even with my hubby and I both stating emphatically in the past that no direct debits were allowed without our authorization. To make matters worse, even when they were alerted that the original direct debit was fraudulent and not authorized by either of us - promptly canceled - the bank allowed this person to set up a further 2 direct debits! There were no safeguards put in place by the bank even after this fiasco. This was preceded by their firm assurances that this could NOT happen when I queried them before agreeing to accept bank transfers! At one time I was even advised by my bank that if the direct debits continued I may have to close down the account and re-open it under another account number! In anycase - my opinion of the safety and responsibility of banks went down dramatically.

BTW - Thanks to that person who suggested a savings account for bank transfers - what a MARVELOUS idea and one I will initiate as I do wish to offer that payment facility.

If you have any problems having DD payments refunded when taken in error, please quote the words "Direct Debit Guarantee" to YOUR bank.

    Possibly print out this page.

This is quite a separate issue from the possibility of being scammed but it IS what should happen when you have been scammed by a DD!
