    Default Stamp Catalogue

Thought I'd ask this question on a new thread:

What is the preferred Catalogue to quote when listing stamps?

    is it Stanley Gibbons
    is it Scott
is it Yvert (have I spelt it right)
    is it any other?

It may just be geographic/personal choice, I don't know ; is there a convertor from one catalogue to another, I wonder?

    - be interested to hear your views...

It really does depend on where you are-those quoted above tend to be the main ones used, though there are plenty of others.
If you google 'catawiki' you can find their site which has listings in all three catalogues' numbers, though it is a bit hit and miss, as it depends on user entries.

Scott's catague is the one used in the U.S. When I was listing our stamps and doing research, I found that European sellers use Stanley Gibbons. I was not able to find a converter,.

There's also Michel - prices are listed in euros but there's loads of details about the stamps if you can translate German

Have only used Scott. I've got hundreds of stamps that need listing. None of the high end stuff; but like to see them.

I always use Stanley Gibbons as I come from the UK originally. I think it really depends on where you started collecting though. I would love to get a good look at Scotts or Michels but catalogues are so expensive I can only afford to get the SG ones.
Because of the differences I always try to include a good description of the stamp including date of issue and picture.
There are many, dare I say "lazy", sellers on other sites who only quote catalogue numbers in their description.
This means nothing to me and even if its an SG number I can't be bothered to look it up.

I'm amazed that people are happy to sell stamps for a fifth of catalogue value.

My Dad said that when he collected stamps you sold them at about half catalogue price.
