Thread: book categories

  1. #1

    Question book categories

I want to upload a few books, but there aren't any really accurate categories at the moment. Can you please add an Autobiography book category? Also, what about teen/young adult books? I have a few books that fall between adult and children.

Not sure about the teen thing - I've always found the idea of teen books a bit odd, since they all mature at different speeds. But if there's a demand... *vague shrug*

Autobiographies are just a form of biography. I don't understand why you'd want a separate category.

Well, even autobiography within the biography section would be okay.

Teen or young adult because the books I have are NOT suitable for children but are too dull for older adults. I would not want a child reading at least one of the books I have, but it isn't a book I would now read as an adult.

I'd hate to see biogs split - autobiographies *are* biographies, they just happened to be written by the person concerned - or in many cases are pretending to be! A large part of your potential audience won't even know what the difference "auto" at the front makes, and won't care. I can't see any reason for splitting them, sorry. I'd rather all sports biogs were together, for example, rather than sports fans having to look in two places
dependent on who wrote the text.

Fair enough, makes sense to me, thanks.

    Default Auto/biographies

"A large part of your potential audience won't even know what the difference "auto" at the front makes, and won't care."

Sorry, but I find that rather patronising.

Could you not compromise with an Auto/biographies category?

Just in case they DO know the difference.

It's not at all meant that way. Take a Beckham (his or hers) biog, for example. I don't believe that everybody buying such a book will know about book terminology or understand the Latin roots of words, any more than I can carry a tune in a bucket or hit the side of a barn with a football. I'm sure there are lots of terms about footy that I've never heard, or wouldn't understand if I did hear them, but I shouldn't have to just to watch a match. Neither should my customers know or care about whether a book is an autobiography or a biography, if they just want a book about Beckham. It doesn't mean they're stupid, any more than I am for being lousy with a football. Saying they might not know, and certainly should not be forced to understand it in order to be able to find a book is not patronising, it's sensible.

Certainly, that seems like a very sensible compromise.

Just because I didn't happen to agree with the original request doesn't make me the bad guy*, you know? Just in case you were thinking of escalating from sarcasm all the way up to (shudder) irony.

*Or gal, as the case may be.
