If you're running Windows 10 just use Microsoft's own (quite lightweight unintrusive) antivirus, Windows Defender. AVG used to be quite good, but it seems that in recent years they've got more and more aggressive about trying to get users to replace the free version and doing things that soak up processor time.
Or you could just find a neighbour who's happy with Linux and ask them why. I guarantee you'll find it like a breath of fresh air and many versions (e.g. Linux Mint) are surprisingly like Windows 7, so switching isn't a big learning task.

Yes, I wanted to reiterate your comment, while gently pushing Linux for those who are receptive!
The world won't suddenly drop MS overnight, but more and more people are finding other alternatives that work well. Indeed, a lot of Android phone users are happy and have no idea that underneath the pretty icons they're using Linux! And Apple Mac users are using an operating system that has innards very very similar to Linux, so much so that I've fired up a terminal on such a machine and used commands that are identical in Linux.

When I first started using AVG, no problems at all. But as it got to be a push to buy the full blown software was when the problems started. If you are using and have no problems, great, but if weird things start happening and files are deleted then you will have a problem. Like I said, my geek and I both agreed that buying some of the software is a waste of money when Defender seems to do a great job. Your choice and I wish you luck that your software, free or paid for doesn't give you a problem.

I uninstalled AVG years ago and didn't look back. Their scans bottlenecked my PC.
Back up your important files onto a zip drive etc and you'll have nothing to worry about. It's hard to get a virus if you only visit or download from trusted, mainstream sites. I just occasionally run the free version of MalwareBytes or Adwcleaner for pups. These companies try to scare users into buying the paid version, when the free version is all you need. When a tried and tested free version becomes very popular, big companies buy it and add the paid version to profit. I've even deactivated Defender and disabled any Windows 10 program in task manager that eats up my CPU and MEM. If your PC slows down, try opening task manager, find what's eating your CPU and google it. It might just be Microsoft running one of their programs in the background for their experimentation. Like SuperFetch etc. Windows 10 was at 100% CPU usage once without me running any programs. Task Manager showed the offending .exes and Googling showed how to stop it in a few clicks. CPU went back to 0% idle. They were not even necessary.
Malwarebytes is a decent company and has a good product. They do need to eat, so I recommend people take the option to buy the paid version if they can afford it. It's one of the best tools around for cleaning out the pests that get into many users' Windows systems. And after using that I also do a scan with another of the same company's products (same website, you have to look around a little) which is AdwCleaner and that often finds some more undesirables.
