The basic answer is you should have the item available to sell.

However you may choose to take a calculated risk and offer an item for sale in more than one location.

If you do sell the same item twice in one day then you must be willing to accept that a disappointed buyer may leave you negative feedback.
Occasionally I sell a book which I've already sold but must have forgotten to delist on ebid. when this happens I let the buyer know as soon as possible and where possible I try to source another copy of the book for them. I also offer them money off future purchases with me. In my experience honesty and good communications is the best policy.

The only exception to this is as in classified ads where you are offering the same item at the same location but at various advertising venues, which is totally different than online auctions.

Fair enough, I see people's points on this. Yet another bad habit I picked up from fleabay. Time to shake off those fleas!
