Just a quick look at the Ford Galaxy gives these figures....

    Galaxy 2.0 145 Edge MP 7 Petrol Manual £2950.00

    Galaxy1.8TD125(6)Zetec7stMP 7 Diesel Manual £3100.00

Galaxy 2.0TD 140 Edge AT MP 7 Diesel Automatic £3750.00

    Galaxy 2.2TD 175 Ghia MP 7 Diesel Manual £5000.00

OK, Ignore everything there except the figures after the £ sign.
This figure is what is known in the trade as the "Advance Payment". This is a NON returnable payment paid by the intended Mobility vehicle driver to the dealer BEFORE taking delivery of a new car. Once handed over, that deposit is lost for ever. It is gone. At the end of 3 years (maybe 5 years for an adapted vehicle) the vehicle is handed back to the dealer who will check it carefully for scratches and dents which may need to be paid for.
So, for a basic Ford Galaxy, the punter pays out an initial £2,950 + £47+ Per week.
Over 3 years, that equates to about £11, 360 paid out for the use of a vehicle, albeit a very nice vehicle and nothing to show for it after 3 years and one day. Your money has gone and your car has gone.
The benefit of Mobility vehicles is that they tend to be reliable, being new, and the tax and services as well as the insurance is also included.

That's a very good point about motobility, yes it may be convenient for some, but in Red's case where there is a chance the car may get knocked about, it's probably not the best option.

If you did get a motobility car, how would you go about driving it when Adam isn't home with you? I'm not certain on this, but isn't there a clause like with the blue badges that you are only meant to use the vehicle when the person it is for is with you?

As for the tax, you can get that on any vehicle, but then you probably already know about that

No the badge isn't linked, but I am sure there was a rule that said the car was only to be used for the sole purpose of the person who the car was intended for ie if you were collecting a prescription for them. Don't know how they expect to enforce the rule but would hate for someone to fall foul of the rule.

I agree it does seem much easier to buy privately if you are able. If you have to stump up them sort of sums of money as a deposit, you could get a decent enough secondhand car for that amount and it would be yours to do whatever you wish.

My mum gets DLA higher but has always chosen to keep the money as she already had a Pajero, she just can't drive it

Knowing Adam's problems and what could happen, it may be better for you to buy a secondhand car and keep the payments as upkeep towards it.

Why did it cost him money? Thought they are lease vehicles? confused!

It cost him money as they charged him for every single spec of dirt, scratch etc. They wanted the car back in pristine condition, which when you have 4 kids ain't gonna happen.
